The impact testing to determine the protection against mechanical stress (IK code) and verification against mechanical stress (UL 746C) are implemented in an in-house testing laboratory at Spelsberg.
In accordance with DIN EN 50102 (VDE 0470-100) "Degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts (IK code)”, the degree of protection provided by an enclosure against mechanical stress is specified by the IK code.
The testing to determine the IK code takes place by striking the area of the enclosure to be tested. The impact is simulated with different weights dropped onto the enclosure using a fall tube. In the process, the critical areas of the house are primarily taken into account in the testing.

As preparation for the test for verification against mechanical stress in accordance with UL 746C, the operating equipment for outdoor use must first be cooled in a cold chamber for three hours at a temperature of -35 (± 2°C) and then mounted on a rigid frame corresponding to the planned use. Then a single strike with a steel ball with a diameter of 50.8 mm (2 inches) and weight of 0.535 kg (1.18 lbs) is exerted on the surface to be tested in the cold state.
The test specimen must not have any damage that can impair the proper use after the testing process. Moreover, the planned protection rating must not be changed negatively.
